DARK DARK DARK NEEDS A HOME IN NYC!

Dark Dark Dark at MASSMoCA

Hey All-

Back in NY from dodging bullets in the DR!

My friends from the awesome wonderful band Dark Dark Dark are living in NYC for the summer and are looking for housing. Please let them know if you hear of anything.

Here’s what Marshall said:

We are 4-5 artists and musicians that would like to sublet a space together for June and July. It seems like something in Bushwick would be ideal, but we are open to other neighborhoods from Gowanus to Greenpoint. A space around $1500 would be fine for our needs.

We will have time to take care of the garden or the cat (probably not the dog), or do small projects around the house. We’re not looking to move into a party space, but next to one is okay. If you know anything respond to marshalllacount@riseup.net ASAP! Thanks!

Thanks!

Marshall

MassMoCA TIME! COMING HOME!

MassMoCA Flier

Come on up to MassMoCA if you’re free. It’s Miss Rockaway’s first art project in a museum!

Here are some pictures Tod Seelie took of the build going on there

It feels funny to say it, but it’s true, I’m really glad to come home after traveling for so long. I can’t wait to help build the massmoca show and I’m excited not to be scared for my safety. In the DR it’s impossible to walk down the street or be in public anywhere for that matter without someone mean-mugging you like crazy. you get an exorbitant number of nasty looks from local men. i hear this is called “guapa” which actually means handsome but refers to an angry girl here. i dunno. this may be something that happens to everyone, or specifically to us as tourists/foreigners. also women are fair game for sexual harassment and cat-calling and people are totally shocked if you get mad about it. there are lots of things about latino machismo which i find hard to stomach, though i find machismo repulsive in all its locations. of course getting shot at and robbed while already struggling with money, with impunity, has a way of disrupting one’s sense of safety as well.

AWWWWWWWWW!

BACK TO THE ROCK

I had to do it. I´m back in St. Louis paying my respects to the boat and tearing it all apart. I´m at CAMP right now and Alexis is flamenco dancing in the next room. Mendon is fixing bikes in the bike shop and I just made a quesadilla upstairs and took a cold shower. The boat is coming apart nicely though itś sad. Why is the trip stopping you may ask? Well. The boats can´t go faster than the current below St Louis with any motor you put on them, meaning we can´t steer or dock, there are only gas fill-ups every 200 miles and you would need to bring a LOT of food & water to make it 200 miles between stops. Some folks are talking about doing the trip to New Orleans, theyŕe totally out of their minds, but I have hope that they will get a real boat, fortify the hell out of it, stock up on supplies and do the journey. Thereś a good tell-all here.

Anyway, it was nice seeing folks at the chicken hut & timeÅ› up, mccarren park, in my living room and around town.
PictureÅ› to come, seriously serious. like thousands.

xoxo

IGNORING ONE’S ELECTRONIC LIFE IS BAD BUT ALSO GOOD.

I’ve been on the river! Yesterday was so amazing! I interviewed a whole Christian biker gang called the Bond Slaves and they totally blew my mind. Not in the make-you-convert kind of way but more in the oh-my-god-that-story-was-incredible-and-you-guys-are-so-cool kind of way. I’ll get those stories online in a couple weeks. Also, my mom visited the river recently and it was lovely. I’m currently in Hannibal, MO where Mark Twain is from. The whole town is incredibly mega-Twainy. What else? I’ve spent all my money and don’t have enough money to get home. I’ve weathered tornadoes and police harassment and am still having the time of my life. Coming home pretty soon.

Here are some pictures my mom took:

Also, a poem that I like by Henry Dumas

If I Were Earth
Each tear that fell
from the crushed
moons of your face,
stabbed me,
broke and split
into a thousand pains.
But I held out my arms
and no not one did I miss,
No, not one pain.
And if I don’t let
you soak into me
and bring me up,
if I don’t let you seep
deep into me
and teach me,
then you can cry in
the morning to the sun,
and tell him to rise up
and burn me away.

ON THE RIVER AT DUCKY’S LAGOON!

So, I made it here. I picked up my boat in Minneapolis and motored slowly down the river with my brilliant boater friend Porter Fox. The boat, docked up to Miss Rockaway here on the right, is a 16′ fishing boat, made possible by the kindness and support of a nice lady named Rebecca St. Claire, the nice folks who sold me the boat, Phil, Dave, Paul, Eli, John Hulk and the other nice folks on Marshall St. in Minneapolis. Mark from the motor shop who gave me solar panels and all the nice people on the river.

My boat now runs on solar power!

Woot!

Check back for updates. Gonna start recording stories soon when we leave Ducky’s Lagoon.

XO
Antlers

IN MINNEAPOLIS!

Yay! Minneapolis is great. I’ve been to Hard Times, the Seward, gotten solar panels, a fishing boat. Phil, John Hulk, Dave, neighbors Eli & Paul and more awesome people than I can number have been helping me get my boat in shape. I’m all registered and Porter and I head out this morning!

Now I just gotta get some antlers on my boat.

STILL VERY MUCH NEEDING A BOAT: CRAIGSLIST PLEA FOR BOAT #3

WANTED: Your fishing boat for Huck Finn! (Miss Rockaway Armada) - $1

Reply to: sale-309533235@craigslist.org
Date: 2007-04-10, 4:17PM CDTI’m looking for an affordable or donated aluminum (maybe fiberglass) 14′-16′ boat with a 15-40hp motor, flat floor, pedestal seats (ideally no furniture except a steering chair, or a sideways bench) and a steering wheel and controls with forward and reverse. The boat needs to be rowable and have a motor as well. Can spend $750 tops.

I’m part of a neat project–a group of folks from all over the country who built a 110 foot long raft (see picture below) last summer to float down the river and do shows and workshops along the way. This year I want to buy an affordable boat which I can build onto (I’d like to build a sort of cap, frame and curtains) and make into a storyboat where I’ll record the stories (oral histories) of folks along the river. We’re called the Miss Rockaway Armada, http://www.missrockaway.org and we started in Minneapolis last year. I’d like to pick up the boat and motor down the river to somewhat near the quad cities where we’re dry docked, then paddle the rest of the way, using the motor to get away from barges etc. Last year seemed impossible but we made it happen, please help this amazing storyboat project happen!

You can read about us at the links below. there was one in the star tribune but I can’t find it online:

ANTLERS HAS GOTTEN LAZY IN HER OLD AGE. MISS ROCKAWAY RUNS HER INTO THE GROUND.

Oh well! So. All is well. No. All is grand! I resigned from one of jobs today. Woo hoo! I’ll be going down the river this summer. Yay!

Okay, so. Lots of good fun things have happened lately. Much partying and carrying on. I haven’t spent any money on anything except laundry in 2 days. I did my laundry.

Here are some pics from Ed Zipco’s photoshoot party at the Brooklyn Industries Gallery in which he constructed a human slingshot with a mattress landing pad. Also pics from the Sweville show and the Miss Rockaway benefit art show opening Also, a small surprise asshole splasher manifesto that appeared on the ground.

AHHHHHH.

Tonight I learned to tune a guitar. Last night at Ashley and (Bonfire) Madigan and Jane LeCroy’s birthday party I sang the night away and it was fun. Thursday’s Miss Rockaway Armada benefit show went very well. There are still some amazing pieces left, so if you haven’t seen the show, look at it on flickr here.  Anyway, tonight I made myself tune a guitar that I brought home from Todd’s house to play. I wasn’t quite getting it perfect so he called me on the phone and listened to me tuning and we figured it out. That was pretty nice. Also, I slept till 3 and then rode my bike in the rain to coney island for the marching band thing and grub at coney island. but they did grub early so i missed it. it was a nice ride anyway.

New York (March 26, 2007) - The Miss Rockaway Armada will host a benefit art exhibit in New York City on the evening of March 29, 2007 at 6pm. The group is calling on artists and art enthusiasts for their support to send this scrap-raft flotilla down the Mississippi River. Currently docked for the winter at a biker bar in Illinois, this group of artists, performers, dreamers and doers from all over the country will get back on the water in June. The group hopes to raise funds for much needed motors, fuel, nautical equipment and transportation. The auction will feature performances by members of the Armada and art from the river itself including a life-sized story booth decorated by David Ellis & Swoon. The benefit show will feature work from dozens of artists, including:*Swoon
*Elbow-Toe
*The Barnstormers
*Dennis McNett
*Gore B
*Visual Resistance
*The 62
*Tod Seelie
*Space 1026
*and many more! The Armada project was conceived by street artist Swoon, and has been built and organized by a collective of 25 artists, performers and activists from New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Wisconsin. The collective floats down the Mississippi River on a 110 foot raft made of scrap materials. Last year they spent months gathering resources to build this floating home/art project, then floated from Minneapolis to Andalusia, Illinois; all the while stopping to meet people, share skills, perform, swap stories, and otherwise engage in cultural exchange. However, they have many miles to go before they reach New Orleans. The Armada is gearing up to tackle the Big Muddy again and are eager to see who and what they will encounter as they continue the impossible experience that characterizes Miss Rockaway. The group is creating a mobile cultural center that embodies their search for creative and sustainable ways of living.

MY CRAIGSLIST PLEA FOR BOAT

Looking for a cheap boat for an amazing project - $1

Reply to: sale-292462723@craigslist.org
Date: 2007-03-12, 12:04AM CDTI’m a member of the Mississippi River’s Miss Rockaway Armada. You might have met us when we came to Minneapolis, Red Wing, Winona, LaCrosse, Prairie Du Chien, Dubuque, Clinton and all the cities along the river before Andalusia, Ill. last year. We’re a huge raft made of all kinds of scrap materials, including 2 diesel engines from Volkswagen rabbits, converted to run biodiesel with longtail props attached. It’s a kind of arts troupe. We come to town and do a show and hold workshops during the day and do face painting for kids and play music. This year we’re interested in building a few satellite rafts and being more of an armada. I’d like to find or buy a cheap 16′-22′ (approx) boat with a working motor and then convert it to run on bike power by building a bike power apparatus to drop into the water over the transom and then and likely building out some pontoons behind the transom to even the weight and attach the motor to.I wonder if you might have an inexpensive boat with a working motor that might sound good for this project. We have very little money but a lot of heart and if you have a boat in your midst that might sound like a good base for this kooky idea we’d be grateful.Check out our website to see pictures: http://www.missrockaway.org, more pictures here: http://www.everydayilive.com/armada
