LOST HORIZON NIGHT MARKET

fire whipper guy, originally uploaded by antlered.

This weekend some rad folks threw a clandestine box truck party at a secret location. Everyone made really cool environments in their box trucks. Laura and Robyn made a campfire box truck and I presented some of the stories that Todd Chandler and I collected and edited with audio selects from the inimitable Annea Lockwood.

Check out her sound map of the Hudson River: http://www.lovely.com/titles/cd2081.html

You can hear some more of the stories we recorded while floating with the Miss Rockaway Armada in 2006 and 2007 down the Mississippi River here: http://thebirdinmyheart.com/2009/01/storyboat/

Here’s a video of Miss Rosa Sparks’ story at the event. Very dark!

RUBIN TAKES ON NYC + THE BAND IS BACK TOGETHER

me & rubes walking home, originally uploaded by antlered.

This was the best week ever because Rubin visited me from Canada  and James and Seb were here from Wales on their way home. It’s good to have visitors because it gets you out of the house. On Monday Dark Dark Dark played at Zebulon and so many people I love to bits came through. Ben Mortimer and Kara Blossom even showed up fresh off the plane from Berlin. Yesterday was the first gathering of a new raft project. SO good to see everyone in one place. I even got to see Governor’s Island AND Katharine AND Laura AND Duncan. Governor’s Island has an amazing installation by Anthony McCall.

This was Dark Dark Dark’s encore of Trouble No More with everyone singing along:

Also, some very important squirrel-related updates HERE. Marc the squirrel man is verifying that he is indeed the feeder and friend of Columbia University squirrels, though there are some who would claim he is a liar. This would, however, be proven wrong as of late. Note the proof below:

AND:

From the creativetime.org website

Anthony McCall
Anthony McCall’s work encompasses three distinct sets of practices: the sculptural, the pictorial, and the cinematic. Consisting of two elegantly simple light projections, Between You and I expands on the two basic components of cinema-time and light-in order to create a spectacular, immersive environment. As the projected light beams slowly travel through mist, they begin to carve out sculptural shapes in space. The fields of light interact with one another, the visitors in the space, and the striking architecture of historic St. Cornelius Chapel. Though the two shapes never meet, they are in a constant play-suggesting that, like two human companions, they attempt to comprehend themselves in relation to one another.

FLOOD THE MOVIE TEASER

Todd Chandler’s upcoming film FLOOD! It was shot aboard the Switchback rafts this summer

FLOOD TEASER from flood movie on Vimeo.

FLOOD is an experimental narrative journey. It begins on the water, on a fleet of hand crafted boats, pieced together from scrap and found materials . On water time twists and bends in mysterious ways. Some people aboard the rafts cannot remember a time before the water. Others are lost in their memories from a previous life on the land. Some remember the boats starting out as a summer project among friends. Others remember fleeing their homes. Still others remember that the way of living they used to know was no longer working, and that something had to give. As the flotilla creeps down the river the past, present, and future stories of the boats and their inhabitants becomes both clearer and more elusive.

A mash-up of genres, FLOOD blends narrative, cinema verité, musical, and improvised experimental film. The film was shot amidst the installation artist Swoon’s 2008 Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea project, in which seven homespun boats were built and crewed by an eclectic group of artists and performers. The boats floated down the Hudson River staging performances in towns along the way.

The film is loosely structured and largely improvised by non-actors playing themselves with fictionalized trajectories. The primary cast includes the bands Dark Dark Dark and Fall Harbor, members of which were actual crew on the boats. In addition to acting and performing in the film, the bands will be collaborating to write and record its musical score.

There will be two final versions of the film: one will be a stand-alone feature length film screened theatrically and at festivals, and another which will tour galleries, performance and community spaces in Spring 2010 with the musician/actors providing a live musical soundtrack.

FOR ONE WEEK ONLY: STUDS TERKEL

This is an episode of This American Life that came out around the bailout. I was really amazed by Studs Terkel’s recordings here. He was a genius. I uploaded the podcast to senduit. You can download it here, or leave a comment and I’ll get it to you.

For a long time I was looking for writings about people growing up poor and their personal testimony on the experience. This is a pretty amazing snippet of his oral history work on the subject.

The show is the culmination of years of research tracking down a 1000 posters, videos, photos, textiles, and other ephemera from social movements from around the world. This is the largest project we have ever done, and we would love it if you get a chance to see it before it comes down. Here are the dates and times it will be open:
Tuesday November 25, 10am-6pm
Wednesday November 26, 10am-6pm
Saturday November 29, noon-8pm
Tues. Dec 2-Fri. Dec 5th, 10am-6pm
FINAL DAY: Saturday Dec 6, noon-8pm

[redacted]
It will be travellling next to the Miller Gallery, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA (Jan. 23–March 8, 2009). If you know of any venues, anywhere in the world, that might be interested in the show, we would love for this collection to be seen before it returns to the drawers of archives and individual’s boxes. (We have items from over 80 lenders, with works from 50 countries.)
Thanks!
-Josh
