The storyboat, affectionately called “The Bird in My Heart” traveled with the Miss Rockaway Armada in the summer of 2007. Stories are HERE.
Thanks to a nice donation from the good folks at A to Z motors in Osseo, MN the boat runs on solar power, using the panels to charge up 2 electric trolling motors on my converted aluminum fishing boat. I got a nice boat donation from Mark Hall in Minneapolis, MN and his lovely wife Sharon. The project took place in the summers of 2006 and 2007 when I floated down the Mississippi river recording stories. In the first year Todd Chandler and I recorded stories together. The stories are still being edited but are making their way up HERE.
Here’s a plea I once wrote for a boat on Craigslist Minneapolis before I found the Bird.
Please help me find a boat!
Aluminum 14′-16′
Motor 15-40hp (johnson or evinrude pref)
Steering wheel
Trailer
I’m looking for an affordable or donated aluminum 14′-16′ aluminum v-hull, with a flat floor and steering wheel/controls, a 15-25ish hp johnson or evinrude, a trolling motor, a trailer, pedestal seats and a sideways bench, a bilge pump, lights and marine deep cell batteries. Can spend $950 tops. I plan to build a structure in the hull and put solar panels on the roof which charge batteries that I can run on to keep up with Miss Rockaway but use the gas motor when needed.
I’m part of a neat project–a group of folks from all over the country who built a 110 foot long raft (see picture below) last summer to float down the river and do shows and workshops along the way. This year I want to buy an affordable boat which I can build onto (I’d like to build a sort of box on top) and make into a storyboat where I’ll record the stories (oral histories) of folks along the river. We’re called the Miss Rockaway Armada, http://www.missrockaway.org and we started in Minneapolis last year. I’d like to pick up the boat and motor down the river to somewhat near the quad cities where we’re dry docked, then use the trolling motor the rest of the way, using the big motor to get away from barges etc. Last year seemed impossible but we made it happen, please help this amazing storyboat project happen!
here are some of last year’s stories:
