The Swimming Cities of Serenissima are built from salvaged materials, including modified Mercedes car motors with long-tail propellers.  For Swimming Cities, SWOON will collaborate with 30 artists from the United States, including OBIE award-winning playwright Lisa D’Amour. As the Swimming Cities move toward Venice, the crew will collect and install keepsakes in an ark-like cabinet of wonders that will be on display on the boats when they arrive.  Once in Venice, the boats and crew will offer intimate performances that incorporate music, shadow puppetry, and story.  The project is produced with the assistance of Deitch Projects, Paper Monster and Black Rat Press.

Secret Project Robot is a not-for-profit space located in the forest of Monster Island and represents the Mighty Robot A/V squad, HappyFun art group and Sound Artists Robot Death Cult. It is a 2000 square foot performance, and installation centered experimental space founded upon the idea that art should be fun.

PLEASE HELP HOLLIS

this is a really sad note from harrison, please give what you can:

Hello friends and family,
So as many of you know, and many of you don’t as I have not even talked to you in a while.  I am in the midst of a crazy tragedy here in southern India.  I was travelling with my sweetheart Hollis by motorcycle and the worst possible scenario has unfolded.  She was in an accident that took a freak turn and I will spare you the gorey details (and they are gorey) but end result, she is in a coma with the most serious injury one can sustain.  She has a serious brain stem injury.  This is the part of the brain that controls and is connected to everything.  The accident happened at 11:30 am on Tuesday Feb. 24th, it is now 5:30 am on Monday March 2nd as I am writing this (I don’t sleep).  This is what’s going on…  The treatment she is recieving is okay, for India.  There are however huge rats scurrying about on the floor.  I am sleeping on the ant covered floor outside her room as I am not allowed in and the water they have used for many procedures is not even purified.  Today as the final straw they would not allow her own mother who has just flown here from Tennessee with emergency support from the US consulate to see her own daughter when she inquired.  She has been allowed some of the time but they sort of shame you/ are mean to you to make you not ask for visitation.  They are not observing her brain pressure and have done nothing to alleviate the swelling in her brain.  These are things that can make of break her early on in her recovery and healing process.  Her chances are slim.  Her chances are slimmer here in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, India.  So we miraculously got her accepted to Stanford which is one of the best hospitals in the world.  Also, as a charity case which is very rare, since she has no insurance.  So what we need now is to get her there.  I am reaching out to everyone I know to help us get an ICU Plane (a.k.a. air ambulance) to fly her back to California.  If anyone knows anyone with a plane we could rent or has anybody in the Air Ambulance industry or a doctor who could volunteer their time to come and get her and fly her to Stanford and reduce the cost… those things would be amazing.  The reality of the situation is that we need to raise $150,000 dollars, now for the quote we have.  There is a blog that Hollis’s best bud Eliza (from her bicycle dance troupe the SF Derailleurs) started: friendsofhollis.blogspot.com and it has a donate button on it.  I would like to urge everyone to give something to this button even if it is 5 dollars and then pass it on to everyone they know.  Hopefully we can all figure out a way to give $1,000 whether it be by sheer generosity or organizing a fundraiser where ever this reaches you.  Send it to people who know her and send it to anyone who is a compassionate person and knows what its like to lose a bright brilliant star of a person.  She is an amazing performer, heart, bicycle and food activist and so much more, in San Francisco (and everywhere) and we need to do everything we can while we have the possiblity, to bring her back.  It was crazy to go through my contacts to select everyone to send this to and see the amount of amazing people who are no longer alive on it and how badly I don’t want to add her to this group.  Please help however you can even if its just keeping her in your thoughts and sending healing energies and magic.  You can write me with any questions or support or call/text anytime, day or night.
Thank you more than anyone can be thanked, for everything you have all done so far, you have kept me going in my darkest hour. Please forward this on.  Put it on myspace, facebook, your blog, craigslist, tribe, tell everyone.
love and teary thanks,
harrison

RIGHT-WING STREET ART? EYETEETH SAYS YES

I posited, somewhat glibly the the splasher might be considered rather fascist and by extension right -wing. He points to Princess Hijab, who goes around putting scarves on posters. I think her behavior is SERIOUSLY up for interpretation Check it out here

What about misogynist street art? There’s plenty of that. Perhaps it would be easier to draw the connections between dehumanizing women and being right-wing. Hell, consumerism and cultural co-optation is pretty right-wing too and there’s a ton of that floating around.

THIS PALESTINIAN LIFE

Title: This Palestinian Life
Location: All Angel\’s Church, 251 W. 80th St. (80th at Broadway) NYC
Link out: Click here
Description: FILM SCREENING: This Palestinian Life

Friday Feb. 6, 2009 Egyptian peace activist Philip Rizk was abducted and detained for four days by Egyptian police at a peaceful solidarity march for Gaza just north of Cairo. [see NYT article]

After Rizk was released, he expressed the wish for all the attention his arrest received to be transferred to the crisis in Gaza.

Keeping with these requests, Rizk\’s documentary, This Palestinian Life, will have its New York-debut this Tuesday, Feb. 17 at All Angel\’s Church in Manhattan.

This Palestinian Life shares stories of nonviolent struggle in Palestinian rural communities in the face of the Israeli occupation. Filmmaker Philip Rizk meets with villagers in the Gaza Strip, Jordan Valley, and the South Hebron Hills who have endured home demolitions, imprisonment, settler attacks, and other forms of oppression that threaten their very way of life.

This film exposes the rarely told story of community-based resistance against the unjust policies of an occupying state.

This event is sponsored by the New York Faith and Justice (NYF&J) and All Angel\’s Church in Manhattan. There will be a discussion with film co-creator Julie Norman following the screening.

Please see http://philiprizk.org/ for more info on Philip\’s arrest.

We would love to see you there. Please spread the word

I LOVE YOU SUN VALLEY!

Just had an amazing snowboarding trip to Sun Valley, Idaho! We mostly shredded Bald Mountain at Sun Valley and then on the way back to Boise airport went to Bruce Willis’ awesome Soldier Mountain. Check out my new friend Gabe skiing “the burn” the scorched backside of Bald Mountain. Notable memories: my new friends Ben and Zack from Detroit showing me how to make a “dirty ashtray” on a giant apres ski tecate at Apples bar; the guy with an idaho jobkiller tat on his neck; the fluffy halfpipe shaped runs on seattle ridge; explaining to a zillion semi-pro skiiers that no i am not looking for more vert, i am from the east coast where our double black runs are equivalent to your bunny hill covered in ice.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ROE V WADE!

Obama on the cover of Ms. Mag!, originally uploaded by antlered.

Happy Birthday Roe! Happy Reproductive Justice Day! Though we still have a lot of work to do in the battle to keep Abortion legal and accessible on a state level, today is the best Roe v Wade Anniversary we’ve had in 8 years. A feminist president!

He said:

On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.

While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.

On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere.
