I’m in Saigon again now after going on a crazy motorbike ride through Laos, meeting an amazing organization in Cambodia called HCC hcc-cambodia.org and a million other crazy things to blog about soon.

Now to get on a 22hr flight and then up to Maine to cut ice out of a lake.

MEMORIAL RIDE FOR CRAIG MURPHEY TODAY AT 5PM

From Pete:

Meet at the base of the bridge at 5pm to ride for Craig. Show up early to hang first, as we’ll probably leave pretty close to on time. At 6pm we meet at Union & Ten Eyck to place the bike together.
Sunday memorial info:
On Sunday, October 21st at 9pm we will be meeting in Macri Square park to hold a memorial for Craig here in Brooklyn. Please bring a self contained white candle to carry with you.
We will be walking up to the intersection and standing there for a song (Heartbeats, by the Knife of course)and a moment of silence.
We want as many people to come as possible.
Photographs will be taken so we can send them to the Murphey family.
It means a lot to the family to know that his friends are all in attendance.

Craig’s roommate has set up this memorial page

Today is the anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

This Thursday, come see a film which is really important to me, in which ten women (including me) tell our stories:
Speak Out: Roe v. Wade in the 21st Century on Thursday, January 25
at 7 p.m. in 304 Barnard Hall

In honor of the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Barnard/Columbia Students For Choice invites you to a screening of Speak Out: I Had an Abortion and a discussion on the state of abortion rights thirty four
years after this landmark Supreme Court Decision.

On hand for the discussion will be filmmaker/producer Jennifer Baumgardner, writer Katha Pollitt, and reproductive rights activist/organizer Anne Keenan.

Thursday, January 25 at 7 p.m. in 304 Barnard Hall (located at 117th St. and Broadway)

In 1973, the Supreme Court decided the landmark reproductive rights case Roe v. Wade, in which they deemed abortion a fundamental and legal right under the United States Constitution. Yet thirty four years later, abortion rights have been increasingly curtailed through both state and federal legislation; in the last five years alone, the
United States Congress passed into law the so-called Partial Birth Abortion ban, South Dakota’s government banned abortion in nearly all circumstances, and pharmacists across the country are refusing to dispense birth control.

What role does Roe v. Wade play in the fight for reproductive rights in the 21st century? Should pro-choice activists place the majority of their focus on upholding Roe v. Wade, or is our energy better spent on other reproductive rights-related issues? These questions and many others will be addressed by filmmaker/producer/writer Jennifer Baumgardner, writer/columnist Katha Pollitt, and Planned Parenthood activist/organizer Anne Keenan. Preceding this discussion will be a screening of the documentary film Speak Out: I Had an Abortion, which explores the personal experiences of women who have had abortions and the ways in which there is still a “back room” of secrecy over abortion despite it being a legal entitlement today.

WELCOME TO THE NEW SECRET LIFE OF ANTLERED GIRLS!! THANKS JASON!!

Vice Bike Riding Guide Pic of Antlers

So! Hello world! Antleredlife has just switched over from blogger to wordpress. Whew! It was so big that I had to get a real wordpress whiz to help me import all the 2 years worth of antleredlife to my new hosting. But now antleredlife is going to be much more awesome. My pictures are way bigger now and I don’t have that annoying thing where it says antleredlife.com and nothing else in your browser despite where you click. My friend Jason was up late last night importing all the stuff from blogger and he’s the best!!! He’s also a fucking slamming designer, in case you were wondering. Thanks Jason!! It’s going to take me a minute to get my blogroll back up and running and to design a new banner for my site. Yay!!!

JUSTSEEDS IS ALMOST SAVED!!!

I just got this email from Justseeds. With the collapse of clamor magazine’s infoshop, everyone from leftturn, justseeds and spread were totally screwed and lost all their distro and huge chunks of money. I know that Josh MacPhee lost about $10,000. I’ve just gotten this note from him below that they have raised $8,056.84 to recover some of that debt incurred by Clamor’s bankruptcy, that an artist doing a service to our community has been saddled with. I’m so glad people have pulled together to help keep this art available and right this terrible situation. Right now they seem to be just under $2000 short–so close to the $10,000 that needs to be recovered. So, I wanted to tell you how to give, and recommend you do it too. Just visit: www.justseeds.org/donate.html Thanks to everyone who has given to help a small art institution in peril.

Hello Everyone-

First, I want to send out a giant thank you for the overwhelming level of support people have shown over the past couple weeks! Everyone has been so generous with their time, ideas and money. In the 3 weeks since my last email, I have raised $8056.84 to cover a significant portion of the debt dumped on Justseeds. It’s been amazing to have so many people offer help, and enlightening to realize how few places there are to get interesting, intelligent and political art.

Also in the past 3 weeks, me and several other artists have put into motion a plan to relaunch a better and stronger Justseeds sometime in March. A dozen artists have banded together to convert Justseeds into an artist/worker owned and operated collective. The new Justseeds headquarters will be based in Portland, OR and largely run by two artists that have had art available on Justseeds before, Icky A. and Pete Yahnke. We will be doing our own order fulfillment out of a space owned by one of the collective members so the means of distribution will be in our own hands rather than in the hands of a possibly unreliable third party. Additionally, we will be launching a new website which will have new features making it a destination for information and dialogue as well as shopping.

I will not be sending many more Justseeds email updates until we launch the new justseeds site. Keep an eye out for the launch! Thanks again for all your support during this difficult period. Your support made it possible to continue justseeds.

Wishing you all the best in the new year.

Solidarity,
Josh

THIS SUNDAY: MOURN OUR DEAD. RIDE BECAUSE YOU MEAN IT.

24 Cyclists were killed in 2005 and 14 cyclists were killed in 2006 on the streets on New York City. Although 10 less people died in 2006 it shouldn’t be viewed as a mark of improvement. 2 cyclists were run down on a car free bike path in 2006 which demonstrates that cyclists are not safe anywhere in new York City.

Ride with us as we honor the fallen cyclists in a day long ride in NYC.
Visit Times-up.org for more details.

We’ll visit each ghost bike site.

WORDPRESS? MOVABLE TYPE?

so. i am growing up and getting ready to switch to my own hosting. i got some cheap hosting at site5.com (thanks jason) but am on the fence about switching blogging software. wordpress is pretty easy to use but trying to import from blogger has been kind of disastrous so far. i’ll try again, but it’s not working as of yet. i hear moveable type is hard to install and is useful mainly b/c you can run multiple blog pages on one site whereas wordpress gives you one blog page and then several static pages. i haven’t tried the new blogger yet, but maybe it’s better. thoughts? i found this post useful, and there are zillions more out there i’m sure.
