Why? Since the termination of the Miss Rockaway Armada in St. Louis last summer, former crew members have been collaborating on new creative projects that have grown out of the energy of the Mississippi river. After an installation at MassMOCA last April, the crew was invited to create an installation in Amsterdam for Program Heartland. Now we need the cash to get there and buy materials!

Tonight was the memorial for Craig. It was really wonderful. People told stories about him and played a song he loved (Heartbeats). I’m feeling like a wreck these days knowing how senseless Craig’s death was. It’s so sad to lose a friend and to know that he was lost because cycling is so dangerous here. Craig is one of the few men I know who work on anti-violence against women issues by starting SafeWalk with RightRides and who work tirelessly on anti-hunger efforts. It’s never fair when someone dies, but this is just so heartbreaking. Please come celebrate his life at this fundraiser on Friday. All the proceeds will go to the wonderful organization he worked for and cared deeply about. Also, if you’d like to help prevent future cyclist deaths, transportation alternatives works hard to make the city’s bike infrastucture better, and you can learn more about them here.
Honey Space An independently produced solo New York debut, in a formerly abandoned warehouse in the heart of Chelsea. Thomas Beale has culled the products of years of concentrated effort and woven them into a single, thick installation environment. Opening party features performance by Mickey Western, Mary Go Round, and New Orleans brass sensation Why Are We Building Such a Big Ship. Homemade intoxicants served by Miss Elixer. Exhibition continues until Independence Day with Thomas and Mickey greeting the public as their own gallery sitters. You can view images to Thomas’ work on his website.

And now I talk I talk some shit about the wackest thing in the room. This girls on bikes project has been featured at the last 2 BFF’s. Can we talk about how dumb this shit is? I really like the fellow who did this project. He’s a nice guy. Still, would you look at this crap? Someone had the brilliant idea of putting up a sign next to this which said ‘bikes are objects, women are not,’ though you wouldn’t know it from the confusion this project produces. With its sultry subjects, the women pictured in most of these images could be in any crap women’s magazine. Way to push the status quo. I think this project ought to be scrapped. It reminds me of the last onion that came out with the brilliant article “Women now empowered by everything a woman does” I know that SOMEONE who will go unmentioned claimed, insultingly, that this project was a way to include women in the festival. That’s like saying the oiled up babes at car shows are a way to include women in the fun of the car show. Rad. Go feminist car shows!

The US labor movement has created some of the most effective political graphics and images in history. However, work and workers, along with the labor movement are often depicted as experiences of the American past: photographs of children in factories in the early 1900s, paintings of historic strikes and Rosie the Riveter. Now the labor movement needs new images of the issues confronting workers today. Graphic Work, curated by Josh MacPhee and Zoeann Murphy is a collection of 40 posters aimed at representing the new fact of labor.

My new book finally came out! Realizing the Impossible: Art Against Authority was just released on AK Press and my co-editor Erik Reuland and I are celebrating at Bluestockings Books. Presenter Bios:
Josh MacPhee is an artist, curator and activist currently living in Troy, NY, usa. His work often revolves around themes of radical politics, privatization and public space. His second book Realizing the Impossible: Art Against Authority (AK Press, co-edited with Erik Reuland) was just published. He also organizes the Celebrate People’s History Poster Series and is part of the political art collective www.justseeds.org.
Cindy Milstein is co-organizer of the Renewing the Anarchist Tradition conference and a board member with the Institute for Anarchist Studies. [ www.anarchiststudies.org] She’s also a
member of the Free Society Collective and Black Sheep Books Collective in Vermont. Her written work appears in periodicals and several recent anthologies, including Globalize Liberation (City Lights),
Confronting Capitalism (Soft Skull), and Only a Beginning (Arsenal Pulp).
Erika Biddle is a founding member of the collective Artists in Dialogue. She can often be found tweaking text for Autonomedia [ www.autonomedia.org ] and for Perspectives, the biannual journal of the Institute for Anarchist Studies. [ www.anarchiststudies.org] She is also on the board of the IAS. One of these days she’s going to lose her mind, remember how to write, and become a full-time poet.
Dara Greenwald has participated in collaborative and collective cultural production and activism for many years. Participation includes the Pink Bloque, Ladyfest Midwest Chicago, Version>03, Pilot TV Chicago, and other groupings that resist being named. She worked as the distribution manager at the Video Data Bank from 1998-2005, where she distributed independent media and experimental video art and worked on the preservation of the Videofreex collection. She also writes, curates, and makes art. Her videos have screened widely, including at Images Festival(Toronto), New York Underground, Yerba Buena Center (SF), and Ocularis(NY). Tonight I learned to tune a guitar. Last night at Ashley and (Bonfire) Madigan and Jane LeCroy’s birthday party I sang the night away and it was fun. Thursday’s Miss Rockaway Armada benefit show went very well. There are still some amazing pieces left, so if you haven’t seen the show, look at it on flickr here. Anyway, tonight I made myself tune a guitar that I brought home from Todd’s house to play. I wasn’t quite getting it perfect so he called me on the phone and listened to me tuning and we figured it out. That was pretty nice. Also, I slept till 3 and then rode my bike in the rain to coney island for the marching band thing and grub at coney island. but they did grub early so i missed it. it was a nice ride anyway.

New York (March 26, 2007) - The Miss Rockaway Armada will host a benefit art exhibit in New York City on the evening of March 29, 2007 at 6pm. The group is calling on artists and art enthusiasts for their support to send this scrap-raft flotilla down the Mississippi River. Currently docked for the winter at a biker bar in Illinois, this group of artists, performers, dreamers and doers from all over the country will get back on the water in June. The group hopes to raise funds for much needed motors, fuel, nautical equipment and transportation. The auction will feature performances by members of the Armada and art from the river itself including a life-sized story booth decorated by David Ellis & Swoon. Whew! And a 3hr boat meeting I called into. Now trying to go to bed. I need to get better at tearing my eyes from the screen.
