PANKABESTIA OPENING: SWIMMING CITIES OF SERENISSIMA CREW SHOW FRIDAY 11/20/09

Much of the crew has created art pieces for this retrospective of the Swimming Cities of Serenissima journey. If you’re in NYC, please join us Friday or come see the show until January 1!
UPDATE: Just listed in Time Out NY, Please RSVP to rsvp@anonymousgallery.com
Keeping it militaristic, a ragtag band of punk soldiers invades Anonymous Gallery after successfully taking Venice. Pankabestia: Punk Beasts of the Swimming Cities of Serenissima (169 Bowery between Broome and Delancey Sts; 646-238-9069, anonymousgallery.com; 6–9pm, free with mandatory R.S.V.P. to rsvp@anonymousgallery.com) is a retrospective of artist Swoon’s expedition across the Adriatic Sea. She sailed with 30 others on three DIY vessels from the Karst region of Slovenia to Venice, making a splash at the Venice Biennale.

PANKABESTIA
Punk Beasts of the Swimming Cities
A retrospective of “Swimming Cities of Serenissima”

Anonymous Gallery 169 Bowery New York, NY
Opens Nov 20 6-9pm

As the 53rd Venice Biennale enters its last days and the world’s art community reflects, Anonymous Gallery, curator Spy Emerson and the artist SWOON provide a glimpse of what critic Jerry Saltz called “…The most moving moment I had at the Biennale…”

“Pankabestia: Punk Beasts of the Swimming Cities of Serenissima,” is a retrospective of artist Swoon’s “Swimming Cities of Serenissima,” her recent invasion of the Venice Biennale. Traveling from the Karst region of Slovenia to Venice, Italy, Swoon and 30+ artists braved the waters of the Adriatic Sea and navigated a fleet of three intricately hand crafted vessels. RUBIN TAKES ON NYC + THE BAND IS BACK TOGETHER

me & rubes walking home, originally uploaded by antlered.

This was the best week ever because Rubin visited me from Canada  and James and Seb were here from Wales on their way home. It’s good to have visitors because it gets you out of the house. On Monday Dark Dark Dark played at Zebulon and so many people I love to bits came through. Ben Mortimer and Kara Blossom even showed up fresh off the plane from Berlin. Yesterday was the first gathering of a new raft project. SO good to see everyone in one place. I even got to see Governor’s Island AND Katharine AND Laura AND Duncan. Governor’s Island has an amazing installation by Anthony McCall.

This was Dark Dark Dark’s encore of Trouble No More with everyone singing along:

Also, some very important squirrel-related updates HERE. Marc the squirrel man is verifying that he is indeed the feeder and friend of Columbia University squirrels, though there are some who would claim he is a liar. This would, however, be proven wrong as of late. Note the proof below:

AND:

From the creativetime.org website

Anthony McCall
Anthony McCall’s work encompasses three distinct sets of practices: the sculptural, the pictorial, and the cinematic. Consisting of two elegantly simple light projections, Between You and I expands on the two basic components of cinema-time and light-in order to create a spectacular, immersive environment. As the projected light beams slowly travel through mist, they begin to carve out sculptural shapes in space. The fields of light interact with one another, the visitors in the space, and the striking architecture of historic St. Cornelius Chapel. Though the two shapes never meet, they are in a constant play-suggesting that, like two human companions, they attempt to comprehend themselves in relation to one another.

OH MAINE!

First sailing weekend of the summer (on a sailboat not a raft). It was glorious despite the bad weather warnings and the actual bad weather. We managed to catch some drops of sun and some light wind to tool around orr’s and bailey islands in Maine. See pics from the journey here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/antlered/sets/72157620198121527/

BACK FROM PARADISE

I’m back in New York from an awesome float on the Swimming Cities of Serenissima and I took lots of pictures! Check them out here. In the time I was there we set out for Venice on the Adriatic Sea and got caught by the Bora, a crazy ancient wind that has been wrecking boats since time eternal and can blow up to 125mph. The video of Alice (the boat) getting through the waves doesn’t do it justice, but you can kinda see them getting tossed around toward the end  of it.

GOOD LUCK CHARLEY!

I will be running this blog from my mobile phone while we are on the river. I am hoping that there will be enough coverage, but it may be sketchy in spots. No matter, it will be an epic adventure. I will do my best to keep you informed.
We got an email at the info@missrockaway account from Charley who is doing the upper Miss and part of the lower Mississippi this summer. This raft looks awesome and he seems very well prepared. Follow him here.

The Swimming Cities of Serenissima is a fleet of three intricately hand-crafted vessels that will navigate the Adriatic Sea from the Karst region of Slovenia to Venice, Italy in May of 2009.  Designed by the artist SWOON, the floating sculptures are descendants of the Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea (Hudson River, 2008) and the Miss Rockaway Armada (Mississippi River, 2006 and 2007). The Swimming Cities of Serenissima are built from salvaged materials, including modified Mercedes car motors with long-tail propellers.  For Swimming Cities, SWOON will collaborate with 30 artists from the United States, including OBIE award-winning playwright Lisa D’Amour. As the Swimming Cities move toward Venice, the crew will collect and install keepsakes in an ark-like cabinet of wonders that will be on display on the boats when they arrive.  Once in Venice, the boats and crew will offer intimate performances that incorporate music, shadow puppetry, and story.  The project is produced with the assistance of Deitch Projects, Paper Monster and Black Rat Press.

Secret Project Robot is a not-for-profit space located in the forest of Monster Island and represents the Mighty Robot A/V squad, HappyFun art group and Sound Artists Robot Death Cult. It is a 2000 square foot performance, and installation centered experimental space founded upon the idea that art should be fun.

FLOOD THE MOVIE TEASER

Todd Chandler’s upcoming film FLOOD! It was shot aboard the Switchback rafts this summer

FLOOD TEASER from flood movie on Vimeo.

FLOOD is an experimental narrative journey. It begins on the water, on a fleet of hand crafted boats, pieced together from scrap and found materials . On water time twists and bends in mysterious ways. Some people aboard the rafts cannot remember a time before the water. Others are lost in their memories from a previous life on the land. Some remember the boats starting out as a summer project among friends. Others remember fleeing their homes. Still others remember that the way of living they used to know was no longer working, and that something had to give. As the flotilla creeps down the river the past, present, and future stories of the boats and their inhabitants becomes both clearer and more elusive.

A mash-up of genres, FLOOD blends narrative, cinema verité, musical, and improvised experimental film. The film was shot amidst the installation artist Swoon’s 2008 Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea project, in which seven homespun boats were built and crewed by an eclectic group of artists and performers. The boats floated down the Hudson River staging performances in towns along the way.

The film is loosely structured and largely improvised by non-actors playing themselves with fictionalized trajectories. The primary cast includes the bands Dark Dark Dark and Fall Harbor, members of which were actual crew on the boats. In addition to acting and performing in the film, the bands will be collaborating to write and record its musical score.

There will be two final versions of the film: one will be a stand-alone feature length film screened theatrically and at festivals, and another which will tour galleries, performance and community spaces in Spring 2010 with the musician/actors providing a live musical soundtrack.
