THIS PALESTINIAN LIFE

Title: This Palestinian Life
Location: All Angel\’s Church, 251 W. 80th St. (80th at Broadway) NYC
Link out: Click here
Description: FILM SCREENING: This Palestinian Life

Friday Feb. 6, 2009 Egyptian peace activist Philip Rizk was abducted and detained for four days by Egyptian police at a peaceful solidarity march for Gaza just north of Cairo. [see NYT article]

After Rizk was released, he expressed the wish for all the attention his arrest received to be transferred to the crisis in Gaza.

Keeping with these requests, Rizk\’s documentary, This Palestinian Life, will have its New York-debut this Tuesday, Feb. 17 at All Angel\’s Church in Manhattan.

This Palestinian Life shares stories of nonviolent struggle in Palestinian rural communities in the face of the Israeli occupation. Filmmaker Philip Rizk meets with villagers in the Gaza Strip, Jordan Valley, and the South Hebron Hills who have endured home demolitions, imprisonment, settler attacks, and other forms of oppression that threaten their very way of life.

This film exposes the rarely told story of community-based resistance against the unjust policies of an occupying state.

This event is sponsored by the New York Faith and Justice (NYF&J) and All Angel\’s Church in Manhattan. There will be a discussion with film co-creator Julie Norman following the screening.

Please see http://philiprizk.org/ for more info on Philip\’s arrest.

We would love to see you there. Please spread the word

WHAT: New York-debut of This Palestinian Life
WHERE: All Angel\’s Church, 251 W. 80th St. (80th at Broadway) New York, NY

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ROE V WADE!

Obama on the cover of Ms. Mag!, originally uploaded by antlered.

Happy Birthday Roe! Happy Reproductive Justice Day! Though we still have a lot of work to do in the battle to keep Abortion legal and accessible on a state level, today is the best Roe v Wade Anniversary we’ve had in 8 years. A feminist president!

He said:

On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.

While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.

On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere.

“Fresh, moving, important…Muriel Rukeyser wrote, ‘If one woman told the truth about her life, the world would split open.’ [This film] gives us 10 truth-telling women, and splits the world open in as many ways.”
Katha Pollitt
The Nation

Underneath the din of politicians posturing about “life” and “choice” and beyond the shouted slogans about murder and rights, there are real stories of real women who have had abortions. Each year in the US, 1.3 million abortions occur, but the topic is still so stigmatized it’s never discussed in polite company.

Powerful, poignant, and fiercely honest, I HAD AN ABORTION tackles this taboo, featuring 10 women – including famed feminist Gloria Steinem – who candidly describe experiences spanning seven decades, from the years before Roe v. Wade to the present day. Filmmakers Jennifer Baumgardner and Gillian Aldrich insightfully document how changing societal pressures have affected women’s choices and experiences.

PARTY FOR HAITI TONIGHT!

sakpasserace

Listen. Haiti REALLY needs our help. Really. The poverty there is unthinkable–people eating dirt cakes to get nutrition out of them–people working in the sugar cane fields but not being paid enough to get enough food to survive. Plus living in a warzone and getting hit with a hurricane. Can you imagine? This year we were pretty close to the Haitian crisis when we were robbed in the dominican republic.

says James Stache:

My friend Colin and his girlfriend Dina are hosting an event this Saturday to benefit hurricane disaster relief efforts in Haiti.  Come get loaded, blow all of your Friday pay and feel good about it.  I am djing the afterparty alongside DJ K-tel (Hangar 18, official TuntableLab clothing model, Brooklyn/IN) & DJ Curly (Workshop Sounds Ent., Philly).  NOTHING beats a loft party with good djs. Of course, I’m bringing the lights and air horn.

In addition to Haitian-themed cocktails to drink and baked goods to eat, there will be a raffle for prizes and gift certificates from Outlier Performance Clothing, Affinity Cycles, Urban Rustic, M Shanghai Bistro, Mishka, King Kog, Laek House, Continuum Cycles, Trackstar, Supermighty, Cyclehawk, Freight Baggage, Wheelove, & Snap Delivery.

ALL proceeds will be sent to Partners In Health (http://pih.org/home.html) to support their Hurricane Ike and Gustav relief efforts, as well their programs that ensure access to quality healthcare.

The whole event takes place after a bike race - but you are more than welcome to join us just for the party.

OH MY GOD WE’RE GONNA BE OK

A brilliant campaign bolstered by the grassroots won!

When I was in Ohio with Downtown for Democracy in 2004 with a group called VoteMob (for voter mobilization).  The group used new tactics that focused on mobilizing young voters who would not be reached by traditional voter outreach which heretofore reached only settled middle-aged or elderly folks living in the same house for over four years. Evan Hutchinson wrote a recap of the strategy and experience here.

To my surprise, when I was leading trainings for an Obama phonebank in Brooklyn, I learned that the lists we were working with were up-to-date because the campaign had invested heavily in canvassing. I only wish we could have had people bring their laptops to the phonebank to enter the data they were collecting real time and not rely on people to do data entry.

A lot of the lessons we learned from our Ohio strategy had been addressed in this campaign, coupled with the myriad brilliant online organizing and fundraising strategies that enabled peer-to-peer contact. I only  wish I had been on the ground much sooner. For now I will know that Obama will not get me health insurance but that it may not be as long until I can afford it. I’m hopeful nonetheless, and here’s something from change.gov “Barack Obama and Joe Biden are committed to ensuring that all Americans have health care coverage by the end of their first term in office.”

I gather that he will be interested in what the online nation has to say. Check out CHANGE.GOV which has been set up for the transition.

Here’s a flickr set from Obama’s personal photog (Thanks to Gideon Yago for the tip)

FIGHT FOR YOUR ELECTION IN PA

an email from the obama campaign:

Obama for America Dear A’yen,

Come to Pennsylvania Barack’s organization in Pennsylvania is unlike anything I’ve ever seen — but it’s about to be put to the test.

With 11 days until Election Day, the McCain campaign has made its electoral strategy perfectly clear — it all comes down to Pennsylvania. “The election hinges on Pennsylvania,” a top McCain advisor told CNN on Monday.

McCain and the Republican Party are throwing a barrage of misleading “robocalls” and advertisements at the voters of Pennsylvania, and there’s only one way to fight back. We need supporters in neighboring states to take a short trip to come out and give us a hand between now and Election Day.

Out-of-state volunteers are going to be crucial to meeting McCain’s challenge. Sign up to volunteer in Pennsylvania any time between now and Election Day.

Organizers here are working day and night to win this crucial battleground state. But to pull it off, they’re counting on the time, energy, and passion of supporters in neighboring states who share their commitment to Barack’s message of change.

That’s where you come in. We’re running strong in Pennsylvania. Our challenge is to keep it that way.

Our strength is due to the hard work of volunteers and organizers on the ground. My family and I have done everything we can — knocking on doors, talking to voters, and even taking a bus trip through Northeastern Pennsylvania last weekend. But the only way to keep it up and take McCain’s last-minute challenge head on is if you get involved.

We’ve come too far and too close to let up now. Our state could be the difference between bringing about the change we need or four more years of the same failed policies. John McCain knows that, and we need to fight back.

Sign up to come to Pennsylvania and take on some volunteer shifts in this final stretch:

http://my.barackobama.com/cometoPA

Thanks,

Senator Bob Casey

MICHAEL MOORE’S INTENSE LETTER ON THE BAILOUT

on the bailout:

Monday, September 29th, 2008
The Rich Are Staging a Coup This Morning …a message from Michael Moore

Friends,

Let me cut to the chase. The biggest robbery in the history of this country is taking place as you read this. Though no guns are being used, 300 million hostages are being taken. Make no mistake about it: After stealing a half trillion dollars to line the pockets of their war-profiteering backers for the past five years, after lining the pockets of their fellow oilmen to the tune of over a hundred billion dollars in just the last two years, Bush and his cronies — who must soon vacate the White House — are looting the U.S. Treasury of every dollar they can grab. They are swiping as much of the silverware as they can on their way out the door.

No matter what they say, no matter how many scare words they use, they are up to their old tricks of creating fear and confusion in order to make and keep themselves and the upper one percent filthy rich. Just read the first four paragraphs of the lead story in last Monday’s New York Times and you can see what the real deal is:

“Even as policy makers worked on details of a $700 billion bailout of the financial industry, Wall Street began looking for ways to profit from it.

“Financial firms were lobbying to have all manner of troubled investments covered, not just those related to mortgages.

“At the same time, investment firms were jockeying to oversee all the assets that Treasury plans to take off the books of financial institutions, a role that could earn them hundreds of millions of dollars a year in fees.

“Nobody wants to be left out of Treasury’s proposal to buy up bad assets of financial institutions.”

Unbelievable. Wall Street and its backers created this mess and now they are going to clean up like bandits. Even Rudy Giuliani is lobbying for his firm to be hired (and paid) to “consult” in the bailout.

The problem is, nobody truly knows what this “collapse” is all about. Even Treasury Secretary Paulson admitted he doesn’t know the exact amount that is needed (he just picked the $700 billion number out of his head!). The head of the congressional budget office said he can’t figure it out nor can he explain it to anyone.

And yet, they are screeching about how the end is near! Panic! Recession! The Great Depression! Y2K! Bird flu! Killer bees! We must pass the bailout bill today!! The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Falling for whom? NOTHING in this “bailout” package will lower the price of the gas you have to put in your car to get to work. NOTHING in this bill will protect you from losing your home. NOTHING in this bill will give you health insurance.

Health insurance? Mike, why are you bringing this up? What’s this got to do with the Wall Street collapse?

It has everything to do with it. This so-called “collapse” was triggered by the massive defaulting and foreclosures going on with people’s home mortgages. Do you know why so many Americans are losing their homes? To hear the Republicans describe it, it’s because too many working class idiots were given mortgages that they really couldn’t afford. Here’s the truth: The number one cause of people declaring bankruptcy is because of medical bills. Let me state this simply: If we had had universal health coverage, this mortgage “crisis” may never have happened.

PORTRAIT OF SILVIA ELENA - SWOON OPENING THIS FRIDAY

So for the last while I’ve been working on this and that for the amazing artist Swoon. This Friday is an opening for a massive piece called A Portrait of Sylvia Elena. Sylvia Elena was a young woman who was killed in Juarez, Mexico. In this piece Swoon collaborates with Tennessee Jane Watson to tell her story and remember her. It’s amazing and the largest Swoon piece I have ever seen. I got to work on it a bit and it was quite an honor.

When I was in college I interned at VDAY for Eve Ensler. We went to Juarez to lead a massive protest against the feminicides in Juarez and bring international attention to the issue. While I was there I met some of the mothers who had lost their daughters. I guess that’s part of why helping with this piece was so amazing. Here’s some info on the situation in Juarez

Here are the details for the opening, please come!

Portrait of Sylvia Elena, a collaborative installation by Swoon & Tennessee Jane Watson at Honey Space, 148 11th Ave, betw 21st & 22nd, 6-8

More info form nonsensenyc.com :

Honey Space presents:

Portrait of Sylvia Elena

Honey Space is honored to present Portrait of Silvia Elena, a collaborative installation by Swoon and Tennessee Jane Watson. The exhibition — a memorial to Silvia Elena, a 17-year old girl who was murdered in Juarez, Mexico, in 1995 — combines text, sound, excavation, shrine elements, and one of Swoon’s most intricate paper cut-out/block prints to date. A different version of the installation is currently on view at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

Portrait of Silvia Elena is a somber, emotional work that, beyond functioning as a powerful memorial, provides a window into the tragic and ongoing issue of femicide. Defined as a pattern of murder targeting women, to which authorities have often systematically turned a blind eye, femicide has haunted communities throughout the Americas. In Juarez, located just across the border from El Paso, the issue became pronounced in the 1990s when, following the passage of NAFTA, maquiladoras sprang up there as they did elsewhere along the Mexican-American border, to take advantage of cheap Mexican labor. Young women who worked long hours in the factories often disappeared as they walked home at night along dark and dangerous roads. To date, over 500 women and girls have been confirmed killed in Juarez, with at least as many more reported disappeared. Human rights organizations put the number of murders much higher- estimating they could surpass 4,000. Most of the victims are young, po
or, and have been sexually assaulted prior to their deaths.

Swoon and Tennessee Jane Watson traveled together to Juarez in 2008 to learn about this issue first-hand. There they met Ramona Morales Huerta, whose daughter was one of those killed. They went with Ramona to visit her daughter Silvia’s grave. They recorded interviews with Ramona, captured the sounds of the desert winds and streets of Juarez, and pored over pictures of Ramona’s lost daughter. From this experience, came this exhibition.

For their installation in Honey Space, Swoon and Tennessee have made use of a long-sealed sub-basement that has been revealed by a hole in the gallery floor. Entering the gallery, visitors encounter a near-empty ground floor space, with a shrine located near the back wall, dedicated to Silvia’s memory. From the hole in the floor, sounds of Ramona speaking about her daughter, clearing dirt from Silvia’s grave, and the desert winds emerge. Viewers are able to enter the hole, and descend rubble to this catacomb-like space, where Swoon’s piece- extending over the back wall, ceiling and floor- is pasted, and candle-lit.
