This is an episode of This American Life that came out around the bailout. I was really amazed by Studs Terkel’s recordings here. He was a genius. I uploaded the podcast to senduit. You can download it here, or leave a comment and I’ll get it to you.
For a long time I was looking for writings about people growing up poor and their personal testimony on the experience. This is a pretty amazing snippet of his oral history work on the subject.

SO! Yesterday was my birthday. Tianna had a potlatching party and Arielle and Adina made a yummy pie cobbler thing and sang happy bday. Bobby Dangerously helped me move boxes all day into storage (a dreadful task I spent three days on) and gave me a ride to the party. I met new people! Rory gave me a ride to the Q train. A potlatching party is like a swap. Because I was moving stuff all day I had two goodwill bags ready to go so I just brought them to the party. Pictured above is Bobby wearing a seagreen shirt that Ellery found for me on the Mississippi river. AND! Jeremy helped me get the boots I really wanted with a discount AND Porter gave me new snowboarding pants for my bday! I am a lucky goose.
Below is some modeling of the jammies shirt by Nana gave me a few years ago and the sarong I’d used for a dance class in college:

here, james and amanda flank the gentleman who modeled a grey sweater i was given while organizing a tent city supply area on the west side highway for workers going into ground zero on september 11.

Yeah, that’s right… guess who’s got a plant that’s connected to the internets?! (This Guy!), originally uploaded by dpstylesâ„¢.
Who is this guy?!
This really cool guy Dennis I know routinely astonishes the average nerd with shit like this.
What? You’ve never heard of Botanicalls? Magic technology that connects plants to the Twitter!
Buy the kit, solder it all together, connect it to the internets (!), stick it in your plant… and then your plant sends you Twitter messages telling you how it’s doing (and when it needs light / water / love). Awesome!
Follow it!
(ps: thanks again Kati… and Rob and Kate H!)

BONUS! Here’s a video of a band I’m completely in love with called WOODS playing ‘military madness’ at the closing party for the Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea
This band is just the best.
So I’ve been driving the nice people at the Burton store & Blades nuts by trying on every boot they have for upwards of an hour and being indecisive. Really at the end of the day I am way too broke to buy snowboard boots. Anyway, Porter and I are going on a trip to Jackson Hole–where he formerly lived and worked–and I’m going to need boots.
So I found out that I like these two the best:

This one is called the Supreme and it’s ridiculously nice and $350. Too much for me.
I also love this one:

It was incredibly comfortable, but still $300. Meh!
GOOGLEMAPS/GMAP PEDOMETER/HOPSTOP FOR BIKES!!! This is so long-awaited. Finally an easy way to plan your bike routes!

Not to nerd out, but this is the future. BART (SF subway) opened all their data to developers… which means anyone can build apps that help people Miss Trains Less Often. Here’s an XML feed of what trains are arriving when: (feed updates every 60 sec), originally uploaded by dpstylesâ„¢.
Dens is a genius. Check out his latest find. Someone please make something cool out of this!
I went to LA for Thanksgiving, which was wonderful. Ashira showed me around Silver Lake and the Hollywood Hills and later I got a tour of the many headshops and drum circles of Venice Beach. I like LA. It’s warm and lovely.
Santi, Sebastian and I in Carol & Dan’s car. The are so cute.
Ashira!
The cutest duck and chicken in Ashira’s yard.
