GOING ON A BIKE TRIP. KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT VIETNAM, BURMA OR TOURING BIKES?

Pennyfarthing

photo from fully loaded touring bicycles

So! I’m going on a little bike trip around Southeast Asia! Much like when I began my trip down the Mississippi River I don’t know much about touring bikes, the region or the language and I don’t have too much money. But! Never fear, I will figure something out. So, any ideas on what company I should ask for a bike from? This ride is for a magazine article so I’ll be putting out asks to bike companies for gear. Ideas on what the ideal road touring bike looks like? Cyclocross? Cantilever brakes? Places to put panniers? I’d like a shorter top-tube to save my back. Also, has anyone been to Vietnam or Burma? Any advice? Known bike routes?

FRIDAY MEMORIAL FUNDRAISER FOR CRAIG

Tonight was the memorial for Craig. It was really wonderful. People told stories about him and played a song he loved (Heartbeats). I’m feeling like a wreck these days knowing how senseless Craig’s death was. It’s so sad to lose a friend and to know that he was lost because cycling is so dangerous here. Craig is one of the few men I know who work on anti-violence against women issues by starting SafeWalk with RightRides and who work tirelessly on anti-hunger efforts. It’s never fair when someone dies, but this is just so heartbreaking. Please come celebrate his life at this fundraiser on Friday. All the proceeds will go to the wonderful organization he worked for and cared deeply about. Also, if you’d like to help prevent future cyclist deaths, transportation alternatives works hard to make the city’s bike infrastucture better, and you can learn more about them here.

MEMORIAL RIDE FOR CRAIG MURPHEY TODAY AT 5PM

From Pete:

Meet at the base of the bridge at 5pm to ride for Craig. Show up early to hang first, as we’ll probably leave pretty close to on time. At 6pm we meet at Union & Ten Eyck to place the bike together.
Sunday memorial info:
On Sunday, October 21st at 9pm we will be meeting in Macri Square park to hold a memorial for Craig here in Brooklyn. Please bring a self contained white candle to carry with you.
We will be walking up to the intersection and standing there for a song (Heartbeats, by the Knife of course)and a moment of silence.
We want as many people to come as possible.
Photographs will be taken so we can send them to the Murphey family.
It means a lot to the family to know that his friends are all in attendance.

Craig’s roommate has set up this memorial page

HEARTS GO OUT TO CRAIG MURPHEY

Craig Murphey

Last night my friend Craig Murphey was killed riding his bike in Williamsburg. Feeling devastated. A gas truck hit him.

Two Cyclists Killed in Brooklyn This Morning

From WABC:

union_teneyck.jpgTwo men, both bicyclists, were killed in separate accidents in Brooklyn Thursday morning.

In the first, police say a bicyclist was struck and killed by an oil truck at the intersection of Union Avenue and Ten Eyck Street in the East Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.

The bicyclist, a 26-year-old Massachusetts resident, was hit while cycling in the wrong direction just after 4:15 a.m.

He was allegedly trying to beat the oil truck, turning from southbound Union Avenue to Ten Eyck Street, when he was struck.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges were filed.

fulton_utica.jpgLater, authorities say a 25-year-old bicyclist was struck by a white passenger van at the intersection of Utica Avenue and Fulton Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, in front of a church.

The driver of the passenger van was not immediately charged. The accident was under investigation.

A woman who lives near Union and Ten Eyck describes the scene:

I came up to the intersection this morning at around 7 a.m., and it had crime scene tape around it. There was a large truck (like an oil truck perhaps) stopped, post turn, and when I turned to look I saw a bicycle completely flattened under the back left tire. The person had been removed from the scene, but from the somber expressions and the remains on the road it was clear that this individual didn’t survive. I would like to honor my neighbor in some way. This is so sad. I ride a bike pretty frequently and run all the time in the neighborhood. The intersection is absolutely terrible, people just peel around and often come very close to hitting me or my dog. As a matter of fact, I was just telling my friend on Monday about almost being hit a few blocks up from this (when I had a walk sign). Actually, all the intersections along Union Avenue in WBurg are like that. It is really, really hard to cross the street. The intersection where this tragedy occurred is a “T” so you can really only cross when the walk light says stop, because no one ever, ever, ever pays attention to the walk signal when they have the green light. This is so sad and senseless. After I walked by the scene, I saw so many cars in a rush try to run over pedestrians at Grand and Union, a few blocks away. I saw a car honking at a cyclist and come aggressively close to him on Union just past Grand. It is so sad. Is there anythign we can do to make drivers more accountable for their recklessness?

BACK TO THE ROCK

I had to do it. I´m back in St. Louis paying my respects to the boat and tearing it all apart. I´m at CAMP right now and Alexis is flamenco dancing in the next room. Mendon is fixing bikes in the bike shop and I just made a quesadilla upstairs and took a cold shower. The boat is coming apart nicely though itś sad. Why is the trip stopping you may ask? Well. The boats can´t go faster than the current below St Louis with any motor you put on them, meaning we can´t steer or dock, there are only gas fill-ups every 200 miles and you would need to bring a LOT of food & water to make it 200 miles between stops. Some folks are talking about doing the trip to New Orleans, theyŕe totally out of their minds, but I have hope that they will get a real boat, fortify the hell out of it, stock up on supplies and do the journey. Thereś a good tell-all here.

Anyway, it was nice seeing folks at the chicken hut & timeÅ› up, mccarren park, in my living room and around town.
PictureÅ› to come, seriously serious. like thousands.

xoxo
