NYC GIRLS: RIGHTRIDES NEEDS YOUR VIDEO!

We want to see your homemade video recording your walk home from public transportation at night. We’re looking for raw footage so no worries about having video editing skills. We’re hoping to receive this by March 15, 2007, please see below for submission info. Here’s the regs:

1) you identify as a woman, transgender (m or f identified) or gender-queer individual.

2) you must live in the NYC area, in one of our current or upcoming service areas*

3) you have access to a digital video recorder - we have limited availability to lend equipment.

4) at the beginning of the video, please have the camera focused on you in a well-lit place (be sure you’re not back-lit!) for 30 seconds while you say your first name, the neighborhood you live in, and the station/subway or bus line you are walking from. please describe your walk home and any safety issues (i.e. “I live 8 blocks from the 6 train at Brook Ave. I do not feel safe walking down the quickest route home late at night because of X, Y, Z so I take a longer route home”, etc.)

5) be with a friend to record the route that might be not the safest if you were by yourself, especially late at night. if your walk home is poorly-lit, feels unsafe/questionable, please record this. We’re looking for the stark reality of what you face getting home at night.

6) you can be walking (and your friend recording you, as you are walking) or you can be the one recording the video as you are walking. Be sure to walk slow enough that the camera is steady/doesn’t bounce too much and feel free to talk about how you feel about the safety in your neighborhood, getting home late at night, the cost of living in NYC etc.

7) the video should be 2 - 10 minutes in length and submitted to us in mpeg4 format**

…so WHY are we doing this? We are looking to create a composite video based on what our Riders experience and how they feel at night as they make their way home. Because YOUR physical safety is an issue we care about. Because limited funds mean that many can’t always afford a taxi home and walking from public transport isn’t always a safe option. Because RightRides is trying to expand to serve more neighborhoods and YOUR VIDEO will make a profound, visual impact on potential funders who are interested in supporting this program. We need money to expand and your participation and video can go a long way!

Please email us with the subject: VIDEO to let us know you are participating and we’ll help answer any questions you may have.

Please feel free to forward to anyone interested. Thank you for helping us make RightRides possible!

RightRides would like to expand in 2007 to these neighborhoods:

**Please email us for specific instructions on how to get the file to us. We can also accept DVD’s of your video, but please email us with the subject: VIDEO for more info.

AHAHAHAHA. SITTING IN ATLAS WITH 13 OTHER SILVER MAC LAPTOPS.

AND…Williamsburg matches today! He he he. Today I am working from home but our wireless is out so I’m across the street at Atlas.

[Update, 11amish]: 8 mac laptops here now, 1 Dell.

[Update, 12:09pm]: 13 mac laptops here now, zero PCs. Also, my pinky is freezing. I don’t type with the right pinky usually. Working from home rules.

[Update: 12:45pm]: Guy walks into Atlas who has tied his dog up outside. The dog is muzzled and wearing a keffiah. Ah Williamsburg.

[Update: 1:09pm]: It’s like zero degrees in Atlas. There are some creepy realtors across the aisle from me.

[Update: 2:22pm]: It’s 24 degrees outside and it feels like it in atlas too. Meh. I should take lunch. One dell, 11 Macs.

[Update: 4:36pm}: Ate some pierogies and went to Lucky cat. They're shooting a film called Pride and Glory on my street. I am the only mac user here, along with a huge glossy screened hp PC laptop. I walked Aparna through the glory of file transfer protocol on the phone. Woot!

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY

Happy Happy Birthday Baby

Todd’s birthday show and Justseeds fire sale and art extravaganza. Yay. Feb 8. THERE WILL BE A SHOW BY ARMADA MEMBER MARSHALL AND MINNEAPOLITE NONA AND TODD CHANDLER HIMSELF!

From Josh MacPhee:

For all of you in New York City, there is a giant Justseeds art show and sale on Thursday night. A giant firesale, with hundreds of prints, posters, zines and books, most at super cheap prices! See below, pass this along, and hopefully I’ll see you there!

Thursday, February 8, 2007, 6-10pm
Ad Hoc Art (www.adhocart.org)
49 Bogart St., Brooklyn NY 11206

Justseeds.org and Visual Resistance present a one-night benefit art show and sale at Ad Hoc Art, Thursday February 8, 2007.

There will be an exhibition of artists supporting the transformation of Justseeds into an artist owned and run collective. Art by Justseeds artists and friends will also be on the sale, with prices starting at $2. The show will also be the NYC release of the Street Art Workers (SAW) poster project.

The show will feature over 30 artists from NYC and around the country, including: Swoon, Chris Stain, Josh MacPhee, RB827, Christopher Cardinale, Michael De Feo, Kristine Virsis, Elbow-Toe, GoreB, Imminent Disaster, k.see, Nicolas Lampert, Meredith Stern, Cristy Road, Pete Yahnke, Icky A., Claude Moller, Colin Matthes and many more.

Along with the exhibition of the above artists will be the NYC release of the Street Art Workers’ Land and Globalization poster project, a collection of 25 posters representing artists from 10 different countries and over 20 different cities.

All proceeds from the show will go toward getting the Justseeds Artists Cooperative off the ground. Posters, books, and zines start at $2, with most Artwork priced between $10 – 30.

About Justseeds

Justseeds was founded as a radical art distribution service by Josh MacPhee in 1997. In nearly 10 years of operations, Justseeds became a crucial resource for radical artists and activists throughout the US.

In December 2006, the company that was filling Justseeds’ online orders (including hosting the website, processing payments, and shipping products), unexpectedly went out of business, immediately shutting down its online store. On top of shutting down distribution, the fulfillment house owed Justseeds upwards of $10,000 (most of that money in turn was owed directly to artists and writers who sold items on the site).

Now, like the proverbial phoenix, Justseeds is rising: a national network of artists are banding together to create a self-managed cooperative that will help spread radical art around the world.
