SENATE PASSES THE UNINTENDED PREGNANCY PREVENTION ACT!

Last night, by a vote of 34-27-1, the State Senate passed S.3661 — “The Unintended Pregnancy Prevention Act.” This critical legislation allows a woman to go directly to a pharmacist to obtain emergency contraception (EC*). While the Bush Administration continues to hold up approval of over-the-counter access to EC, the women of New York can now avoid unnecessary delays in getting birth control.

Echoing the support of the State Assembly earlier this year, state senators from both sides of the aisle came together to pass this bill. NARAL Pro-Choice New York applauds Senator Nicholas Spano (R) and Assemblyperson Amy Paulin (D) for sponsoring the bill, and Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno (R) and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D) for their leadership.

The success of this bill was a result of three years of hard work by NARAL Pro-Choice New York - and your letters, e-mails, phone calls, and visits to Senate offices.

Your state senator, David Paterson, was one of the senators who voted YES for this vital piece of legislation. Thank your senator for standing up for women’s health and access to emergency contraception by sending a message today!

(and don’t worry, we will make sure that those who voted no on this bill hear outrage loudly and clearly from their constituents!)

*****************

* EC, also known as the morning-after pill, is a safe and effective concentrated-dosage of birth control pills that can prevent unintended pregnancy if taken within a few days of contraceptive failure, unprotected sex, or sexual assault. It is most effective the sooner it is taken - therefore timely access is critical.

MORE ON ANDREW MORGAN.

Andrew Morgan was riding by where many of us often ride, Houston and Elizabeth, where he was killed by a truck making a right turn and not paying attention to him screaming. Here’s an article with the details (via seenster.com). something really desperately needs to be done–the city needs to make it safer for cyclists and crack down on driver recklessness. I’d like to propose a poster and sticker campiagn that lays out the rules of the road, a la the flier i keep posting, but that also speaks to the 4 or 5 deaths this month, including the kid who was struck by a cab and left. keep up on bike info with bikeblog and time’s up. and don’t forget to ride critical mass this friday.

ANOTHER CYCLIST KILLED THIS MORNING

reprinted from Eefers:
Just got word over the Brooklyn Critical Mass list that another cyclist was killed today. According to Jym Dyer over at Time’s Up!, Brooklyn bicyclist Andrew Ross Morgan, 25, was killed by a truck in Manhattan on Houston near Elizabeth today. If I find out any more details, I’ll post them here.

CARNAGE AND AN OPENING LAST NIGHT.

my leg this morning. ewwwww. so below are some pics of the amy sillman group show opening and a bunch of my leg and hand when i fell off my bike going super fast passing someone tipsy and slipping out on some gravel right after i got off the wburg bridge on the brooklyn side. hurt like hell. i kind of went into shock right after it happened, got back on my bike, rode home, carried my bike up the stairs into my apt like a robot and climbed into the shower to get the tar out of my road burn and wash the blood off. then the pain hit me and i broke down hyperventilating and crying and my roommates took care of me. now i’m covered in bandages. i had forgotten my helmet at the deitch projects and i got really lucky that i didn’t hit my head when i fell. then on the way to pick up my helmet a car pulled out and tried to crush me and i got sandwiched in between 2 cars and one scraped up my pedal and almost caught it in the hub cap. but i got lucky and was okay. hope that wasn’t too much information. blah blah bike accidents. i also started this today.
